Dave Matthews draws heat for God comments

Dave Matthews is taking some criticism for his recent comments in Rolling Stone, where he said the concept of God is "more irritating than Santa Claus."

NewsBusters, a site devoted to "exposing and combating liberal media bias," has a blog post with Dave's comments and lots of anti-Dave feedback from readers. Here's part of one reader's rant:

"Dave Matthews obviously hates himself and is very angry like all liberals at God, because when he was screaming to his pillow in pleas like all of us do as children during our rough times.......God did not come like Dave had demanded...........and Dave never saw that God is always there not to take us out of the problem, but to help us grow through it to be better Spiritual people."

These were Dave's full comments about God:

"The idea that we’re somehow centrally important to the planet’s existence is pretty comical -- although I’d like us to be. I’d like to think that the eyes of some heavenly body are watching us and saying, ‘Oh, look at my beautiful children.’ But it’s absurd. It’s just our attempt to be more important than a tree. ...

"I use the word 'God' in my songs all the time, because I don't know what the hell is going on. So that's God -- everything I don't know. But the idea of God as a fatherly figure who looks down on us and worries about how we're doing or takes sides when we have fights -- it's more irritating than Santa Claus."

Dave seems to address this topic in the song "Eh Hee" when he sings: "Strange evolution how people have come to believe that we are its greatest achievement/When really we're just a collection of cells overrating themselves/Hello God, I'm avoiding the truth."

As a practicing Christian, I must say that nothing Dave said in the Rolling Stone article, that I read in full, offended me.

Everyone, whether religious, spiritual or non-religious, non-spiritual have every right to express their thoughts and feelings on the existence of such a being.

He has made a very good point, in that, we do not know everything. That which we believe to be God may in fact not be "God" at all. Our concept of what may in fact be God is probably further from the truth than we would like to admit.

I include myself in this. Dave Matthews is a good musical artist. He has a talent for writing deep, thought provoking lyrics and probably doesn't care too much what the critics are saying about his comments. Nor should he.

It's easy to be a critic. It is hard to uplift, inspire, compliment and admit ignorance. Humility is what Christ embodied and something we all ought to strive for, whether you believe Jesus was whom he said he was.

I appreciate his honesty. I know that someone whom you admire or respect can irk you by professing a belief contrary to your own. But the above individual who was clearly upset should understand that this has nothing to do with him and what he believes. It wasn't a slam to any particular community nor was it an attack on those who do believe that which Dave does not. It was a response to a question asked by the reporter on Dave's thoughts regarding God.
That's it.

Peace and love to all.
