Report: Virginia Tech may host DMB concert

Virginia Tech officials are considering bringing Dave Matthews Band to campus this fall for a benefit concert, according to this report in Planet Blacksburg, a student-run news site. The story quotes an anonymous source in the university administration, who says many entertainers have offered to perform on campus since the April 16 shootings that killed 32 people. DMB is "one of those receiving strongest consideration," according to the newspaper.

DMB of course got its start in Charlottesville, Va., about 150 miles from the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. The band posted this message of condolences on its Web site the day after the shootings.

Dave Matthews playing high-priced benefit concert

Dave Matthews will be part of a summer concert series to raise money for a Long Island private school, according to this article in The East Hampton Star.

Five shows -- scheduled for July 14 and 28 and August 4, 11 and 25 in East Hampton, N.Y. -- will benefit the Ross School. The other artists scheduled to perform are Prince, Tom Petty, Billy Joel and James Taylor, and a ticket to all five shows will cost a whopping $15,000, the newspaper said. The shows are not yet official because the school has not applied for the permits.

It's unclear if the show will be just Dave, or if the references to "Dave Matthews" in the newspaper article really meant "Dave Matthews Band."

Clearing the air on 'hot rumors'

Blog-Eyed Fish caused quite a stir on AntsMarching.org this weekend when a reader re-posted my "hot rumor" that Dave Matthews Band will go on hiatus after this year. Here's that thread, "DMB will take a two-year break after 2007."

I wanted to take this chance to respond to what was said in that thread and explain what Blog-Eyed Fish's "hot rumor" section is all about. First off, I did not post that thread on Ants to get publicity for this site. Secondly, and most importantly, the "hot rumor" section is supposed to be just that. If I had some concrete evidence that it was true, I would have made it a blog posting.

That said, I don't make up the "hot rumors" either. Usually they are unsubstantiated claims I read on message boards or on other sites. This one about DMB taking a break, I heard several months ago from someone who is somewhat close to the band. It has been down at the bottom of the blog since then, so I was pretty surprised to see the commotion it caused this weekend.

I hope that everyone who saw Blog-Eyed Fish for the first time because of the Ants posting liked the site, and I hope you keep checking for updates as DMB begins its international tour tomorrow and continues working on a new album. It's going to be a busy and exciting time for us fans.

DMB Heading Back to Studio

Dave Matthews Band will return to the studio in late April or early May, AntsMarching.org reports today. The article cites "multiple sources" who say DMB's last studio sessions were in January and November, where the band recorded "Shotgun," "Idea of You," "Can't Stop" and some other songs -- but not "Break Free" or "Kill the King," the other two new songs played during the 2006 tour.

Whenever DMB returns to the studio, it won't be for long. The band has an international tour scheduled with dates in Australia from May 1-5 and Europe from May 23-June 3.

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds' show last night at Radio City Music Hall will be released on CD and DVD, Dave said during the concert. It will be their first DVD and second live album, following the 1999 release, Live at Luther College.

Dave Plays Piano at Radio City

Dave Matthews played piano at a concert for the first time ever, at tonight's show with Tim Reynolds at Radio City Music Hall. Dave played the piano on "Out of My Hands," with Tim accompanying him on guitar. It will be interesting to hear and see how it went.

Also from tonight's show, which is just wrapping up now, Dave and Tim played "Ayhee" for the first time -- although Dave and Friends have played it, as has Dave solo. Rumors are the show may become an official CD and possibly even DVD release.

Review sings high praises for D&T

The Boston Herald has a review of Friday night's Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds show at the Wang Theater, "Dave Matthews feels the fever." The writer seems to be insinuating the rumor going around the message boards that Dave was not in fact sick that night, as he said throughout the show -- just really, really stoned. AntsMarching.org already has the show up for download, too.
