LeRoi Moore dead at 46; saxophonist was
original Dave Matthews Band member

LeRoi Moore died today of complications from a June 30 ATV accident. The Dave Matthews Band saxophonist was 46 years old.

LeRoi passed away in Los Angeles, where DMB was scheduled to begin a two-night stand at the Staples Center. A statement from The Official Dave Matthews Band Website said LeRoi died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, and he had recently gone to his L.A. home to begin extensive phsyical rehabilitation.

leroi mooreTMZ.com also reports that DMB will play its concert tonight as scheduled.

Fans outside DMB's hotel in Los Angeles today reported seeing Dave Matthews crying, and he and other band members and crew hugging each other while boarding their tour buses.

The ATV accident that ultimately took LeRoi's life happened outside his Virginia farm during a short break in DMB's tour. He was admitted to the University of Virginia Health System in serious condition and released early the week of July 13. AntsMarching.org reported that LeRoi had suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in the accident, and on July 20, DMB announced that he had been readmitted to the hospital because of complications from his injuries.

LeRoi and drummer Carter Beauford were the first two Charlottesville, Va. musicians that young bartender Dave Matthews approached in early 1991 about playing some songs he wrote. With bassist Stefan Lessard and violinist Boyd Tinsley, they formed Dave Matthews Band and went on to sell more than 30 million albums in the United States alone.

Jeff Coffin, saxophonist with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, has been filling in for LeRoi since his injury, and DMB had begun recording a new album, with LeRoi, before the 2008 summer tour began. Of course, it is way too early to know what the future may hold for a new DMB album or the band in general in light of LeRoi's passing.

LeRoi Moore played a crucial role in defining the unique sound that drove Dave Matthews Band to superstardom in the 1990s. He stood still at the side of the stage, eyes often hidden behind his sunglasses, and let the sweet sounds of his saxophone do the dancing for him.

Stay tuned for updates on LeRoi Moore's death as they come in. DMBnews.net sends it thoughts and prayers to LeRoi's family, friends and the entire DMB community mourning his loss. Please feel free to leave your own best wishes or favorite memories of LeRoi in the comments section.

I have never felt so saddened by the death of a musician, artist, or celebrity. It speaks to LeRoi's ability as an artist that I can feel so connected to a man I have never actually met. I loved LeRoi and I love this band. May he rest in peace, and may all of his friends, the band included, get a chance to grieve and pay tribute to a singular talent. Cheers, Leroi. You are already missed.

I can't believe this. It's sad that a much older Ozzy Osbourne could survive an accident like this just a couple of years back but Leroi unfortunately could not. For a guy who wasn't exactly the most animated on-stage, he certainly knew how to let the music do the talking. His playing was always full of emotion and he was not afraid to take risks when soloing, something I always respected greatly. He will be missed.

I cannot say, and will not say that he is dead. He is just away. With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand, He has wandered into an unknown land ...

Words cannot express the tremendous loss I feel over this news. My thoughts and prayers are with Roi's family as well as the band and all those DMB fanatics, like myself, out there. "If I go before I'm old, oh, brother of mine, please don't forget me if I go..."

Jenna, those lines from Bartender are what Dave opened the show with tonight. Could not have made a better choice.

Ugh. Someone has already edited the band's wikipedia page to list Roi as a "former member" on the right side of the page. Please someone change this back. It's too soon for that kind of crap.

The Dave Matthews Band will never be the same without you. You created the most beautiful music and added such a unique tone to this band, which is what drew me to it all those many years ago. You will be deeply missed. My thoughts are with your family, friends and DMB.

With wet eyes and deep sadness I write these words.....It seems impossible...at least hard to want to believe he has left us...I can only imagine the void his brothers must be experiencing at this time...the crafter of beautiful sounds...the "extra" that LeRoi presented to complete the music...the exchange of creativity between artists...feeling the reverberation of that wonderful baritone in his hands, a master of the music...releasing time and allowing the listener to accompany the musician on a melodic journey...LeRoi at the sax, created melody that touched one's core...I am humbled when I think of the privledge of listening to music from such a master....my condolences to his family, Dave, Stephan, Boyd, Carter, Butch and the myriad of musicians and firedancers that are feeling this great loss....good-night my brother. my your sleep be peaceful until we meet again...I remember one year at the Gorge, one of the nights LeRoi was late back to the stage for the encore. The band was playing and his solo part was coming up, he missed the first part, but came in strong when he arrived the show finished strong as usual. We got a good laugh about it because you could tell the rest of the band was giving him the biz during the encore and laughing on stage, etc. The next night, the band comes on stage. LeRoi is without his surgically attached sunglasses. I imagined that he must have lost a bet or that was his penalty from his mates for being late the previous night ... being forced to play without those sunglasses on...a rarity...I don't know, but I hope that was actually the case...
Good night LeRoi and thank-you!..you will always be in our hearts and minds

You will be sorely missed Leroi as a part of DMB but even more so as the wonderful person that you were. DMB will never be the same without you. You were an integral part of the band that has brought so many of us so many incredible memories. We'll never forget the impressions that you've left on our lives.

Stunned. And profoundly sad. This is as close as I can come to expressing my sense of this tragedy, for words simply fail right now. Still, I'm grateful to have been at Staples Center Wednesday night, where after having had 24 hours to at least try and catch their breath, those boys came together around their brother, and for 3 tasty hours poured their hearts & souls into what I believe may be the best live musical performance I have ever experienced. I wished it would never end.

Oh wow... what an extraodinary musician. LeRoi's many contributions to DMB will definitely be missed. The breath blown into that saxophone stirred up something fierce and vivacious to many of the DMB tracks. I will continue to celebrate,DANCE and remember that inspirational sound LeRoi shared with us.
Rest in peace LeRoi..
