No Dave Matthews-related Obama rally in Ohio

Barack Obama's campaign has decided not to put on a rally that would have brought Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds to Ohio University, according to student newspaper The Post.

The rally was being planned for Sunday and was also supposed to feature a nationally prominent speaker, but not Obama himself. Original rumors said Dave Matthews Band was going to perform. Neither Obama's campaign nor an Ohio U. spokesman gave any explanation why the event was called off.

Tim Reynolds to join DMB at Obama rally?

Tim Reynolds has canceled his March 2 show in Indianapolis, Ind., leading to speculation he will join Dave Matthews Band for a Barack Obama rally at Ohio University on that date instead.

The Obama rally is still not confirmed, and details are sketchy, but there are a few likely scenarios:
  • Tim will perform with DMB -- something he hasn't done since 2004.
  • Tim or his band, TR3, will open for DMB.
  • The concert will actually be Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds, not a full-band show.
March 2 is just nine days away, so if the rally is in fact happening, confirmation should be coming soon. DMBnews.net will have all the information as soon as it's available.

UPDATE: The Athens Messenger reports that, if the rally happens at all, it will feature a performance by Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds. They will only be a "small part" of the event, an Ohio University official told the newspaper.

Dave Matthews Band may play Obama rally

Dave Matthews Band's first 2008 concert could be much sooner than expected.

DMB is in talks to play a March 2 rally for presidential candidate Barack Obama at Ohio University, according to student newspaper The Post. Ohio officials and the event promoter still need to finalize the deal, but a preliminary contract does exist, the school's vice president for student affairs said last night.

Dave Matthews has endorsed Obama for president and donated money to his campaign.

UPDATE: AntsMarching.org reports that Obama will be at the rally, but The Post article clearly says, "Obama is not scheduled to attend." DMB will be the only rock stars there if the event comes together.

Kokua Festival tickets sell out quickly

Tickets to the Kokua Festival, a two-day concert featuring Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds and Jack Johnson, sold out in 20 minutes Saturday -- and ticket scalpers are to blame, according to the Honolulu Star Bulletin.

Tickets for the April 19-20 benefit festival have face value between $40 and $125, but "mainland" ticket buyers "snapped up" the tickets, the newspaper reported. Online ticket brokers are now selling tickets for at least $102 and upwards of $1,000.

The concerts sell out every year, but the first-ever Dave Matthews-related concert in Hawaii increased demand this year. One fan, Weston Yap, told the Star Bulletin: "I thought the festival was about getting local people to learn to be environmentally responsible, and supporting local sustainability. ... It'd be a shame if the people of Hawaii couldn't get in."

Dave Matthews Band New Album Preview:
'Cornbread'

Dave Matthews Band is hitting the studio early this year to record the follow-up to 2005's Stand Up, and DMBnews.net is taking a look at every song that could potentially appear on the new album. In Part Seven of the Dave Matthews Band New Album Preview, we focus on "Cornbread."

"Cornbread" made its first appearance during the Feb. 23, 2007 Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds concert in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. Dave and Tim played the song four times during their European tour and twice more upon returning to the United States.

On Aug. 1 in Mansfield, Mass., on opening night of the Dave Matthews Band summer tour, Dave played "Cornbread" solo to start the encore. The next night, Carter Beauford and Butch Taylor joined him on the song, and it became a full-band song Aug. 4 in Hartford, Conn.

Over the course of the tour, the song became a fan favorite with its upbeat sound and comically dirty lyrics. Dave and Tim released the song on their Live at Radio City album, and it also appears on Dave Matthews Band's Live at Piedmont Park album.

Why "Cornbread" will end up on the new Dave Matthews Band album: It was the most-played song on DMB's 2007 summer tour, and Stefan Lessard has said it will likely appear on the new CD.

Why it won't: Its sound may not fit with the rest of the album.

Dave Matthews Band to record new album
in Seattle, pre-produce in Charlottesville

Dave Matthews Band will start pre-production on its next studio album this week in Charlottesville, Va., then head to Seattle for recording sessions, according to Stefan Lessard.

There is still no information about who will produce the album or what songs will appear, although Stefan has mentioned "Corn Bread" and "#27" as likely candidates in the past. AntsMarching.org also reported that DMB played "Loving Wings," "Sweet Up and Down" and "Shotgun" during a brief November studio session.

Stefan wrote about the plans for a new DMB album today on his MySpace blog, but the locations were the only information he gave. Charlottesville is of course the band's home base, and Dave Matthews now lives in Seattle.

Stefan also said that Yukon Kornelius, the cover band he formed with Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies and Guster's Adam Gardner, will return.

Dave Matthews Band to play Rothbury Festival

Dave Matthews Band will headline the Rothbury Festival, a new four-day event scheduled for July 3-6 in Rothbury, Mich.

Widespread Panic, John Mayer, 311, Phil Lesh and Friends, Snoop Dogg and Modest Mouse are also some of the 70 acts who will perform at the Rothbury Festival, the latest of several events looking to capitalize on the success of Bonnaroo.

The festival is Dave Matthews Band's first confirmed tour date of 2008. It could be an indicator that DMB's tour will have already begun by July and the tour will be in the Michigan area around the time of Rothbury.

Rothbury
is about three hours northwest of Detroit, near Lake Michigan. The festival will take place at the Double JJ Ranch, an outdoor resort that features golfing, horseback riding and camping as well as on-site lodging, restaurants and bars.

Rothbury Festival tickets go on sale Feb. 27 and cost $244.75.

UPDATE (1:29 p.m.): Dave Matthews Band will play the Rothbury Festival on the night of July 5.

Dave Matthews Band Super Bowl effort begins

Dave Matthews Band will play next year's Super Bowl halftime show if a group of fans has its way.

A Facebook group has started a campaign to get DMB to play at Super Bowl XLIII, which will take place Feb. 1, 2009 in Tampa, Fla. Facebook groups start all the time for all sorts of different causes, but this one now stands out because Stefan Lessard joined it yesterday and is listed as one of its officers. It's still a long shot, but at least the seed has been planted with one of the band members.

The NFL won't announce the Super Bowl halftime show performer until late in the regular season. Ever since the Justin Timberlake-Janet Jackson fiasco in 2004, the NFL has chosen established rock acts with mass appeal: Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, Prince and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Mom pleads to buying teens booze for DMB show

The case of a false sexual assault reported before a Dave Matthews Band concert in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. has landed one woman on probation.

Lisa M. Vedder, 42, of nearby Clifton Park, N.Y. pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of unlawfully dealing with a child and received a three-year probation sentence, according to today's Albany Times-Union. Police in August charged Vedder with buying vodka for her daughter and three friends, all 15, and then dropping them off at the DMB concert on Aug. 14.

Before the concert, one of the girls claimed that a man in his late teens or early 20s sexually assaulted her, but a two-day police investigation found that consensual sexual acts occurred between the girl and a 15-year-old boy.

Vedder's case was actually resolved in December, but the Times-Union just reported on it today. Under the terms of her plea, she must go to an inpatient alcohol treatment center for four to six months and then participate in a drug court program for 12 to 18 months.

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds playing
Seattle benefit show with Dalai Lama

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds will perform at an April 11 benefit in Seattle featuring the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetans.

The event will feature a Dave and Tim concert, preceded by a panel discussion including Dave and the Dalai Lama. It will take place at Key Arena, and it's part of a five-day celebration in Seattle called Seeds of Compassion. Seeds of Compassion, according to the event announcement, "is an initiative to bring world attention to the importance of nurturing kindness and compassion, beginning with children and extending to all who touch their lives."

DMBnews.net interviewed Tim Reynolds
earlier this month, when he talked about re-forming his band TR3, what it's like playing with Dave Matthews and his thoughts on Radiohead's new album.

The DMBnews.net Interview: Tim Reynolds

Tim Reynolds has reincarnated TR3, the band that first exposed Dave Matthews to crowds in Charlottesville, Va. This new version features bassist Mick Vaughn and drummer Dan Martier, two musicians Tim met when he moved from New Mexico to North Carolina's Outer Banks last year.

"There's a lot of music there, and I started playing out locally," Tim said. "We just had a great rapport, and we did a couple gigs as a trio, and it just gelled."

Tim gave an exclusive interview to DMBnews.net on Friday as he and his bandmates traveled by van to a concert in Tampa, Fla.

"I just like playing music," he said. "It's just fun to play with a band again. I'd been doing things with drum machines for a while, and I got kind of bored. It's not as exciting as playing with humans, clearly."

One of the humans Tim has played with most is of course Dave Matthews. They have played acoustic concerts together since 1993 and released two live albums, Live at Luther College and Live at Radio City. Tim played electric guitar on Dave Matthews Band's first three studio albums, as well as Dave's solo album, Some Devil. He was a regular guest on stage with DMB in the 1990s, and he's also a member of the Dave Matthews and Friends band formed in 2003.

Dave and Tim this week announced they will appear at the Kokua Festival in Hawaii in April. Tim spoke to DMBnews.net before that announcement, but he did talk about past performances with Dave. Here's an audio clip:

Tim later talked about what it's like to play with DMB, which he hasn't done since 2004: "With the band it's just fun to play everything, 'cause you're just rockin' out."

Dave and Friends shows -- featuring the frontman flanked by Tim and Trey Anastasio on electric guitars -- included a lot of cover songs, and Tim mentioned Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" as one of his favorites to play. On the current TR3 tour, the band is playing songs by James Brown and Led Zeppelin, among others.

"In a club atmosphere, I think people really like the classics," Tim said.

TR3 also plays "Purple Rain" by Prince. Video of Tim playing the song on the guitar with his teeth appeared online, but Prince is notoriously protective of his music's copyrights and had the video taken down.

"I understand that," Tim said.

There are T3 and Tim Reynolds solo shows scheduled in the Upper Midwest and Northeast through the end of March. Tim has done most of his recent recording at home, and he said he's looking forward to eventually getting into the studio with his band.

"But right now," he said, "I'm just focusing on this tour."

Dave Matthews endorses Barack Obama

Dave Matthews announced today he is supporting Barack Obama for president.

In the endorsement, posted on the Dave Matthews Band Official Site, Dave writes that "corporate greed and its involvement in policy making, along with political cronyism have made it nearly impossible for the people to govern. ... It is time for a change and that is why I support Barack Obama for President." Dave donated $2,300 to Obama's campaign in 2007, according to The Huffington Post.

The endorsement of Obama is the most overt political statement by Dave or any DMB member yet. DMB played the Vote for Change tour in 2004, which was an implicit endorsement of John Kerry, and Boyd Tinsley has performed at fundraisers for John Edwards.

Still, when it comes to overt political endorsements, it will be hard for DMB to top Pearl Jam, who released the song "Rock Around Barack" today.
