LeRoi Moore excluded from Grammy memorial

The Grammys did not honor LeRoi Moore during their tribute to the fallen musicians of the past year. And now the Recording Academy is feeling the backlash.
LeRoi died Aug. 19 from complications of a June ATV accident, and he was one of the more well-known, current musicians to pass away in 2008. But when the Grammys aired a video montage during Sunday night’s awards show, the name and face of LeRoi Moore was nowhere to be found.
The oversight — or downright lack of respect, however you want to look at it — drew the ire of Dave Matthews Band fans and members alike. Dave Matthews wrote on Twitter, “the Grammies (sic) are not my cup of tea,” while Stefan Lessard was much angrier: “It just goes to show how full of shit the Grammys have become.”
The Academy has offered this explanation for not honoring LeRoi, according to TMZ.com:
“Nearly 250 members of our music community have passed in the last year, and all of them have been listed in the program book for the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards, including LeRoi Moore. For the “Encore” segment of our annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, unfortunately we are unable to include all of the talented and wonderful people within the allotted timeframe. The Academy recognizes Moore’s contributions to music and music education, and we are deeply saddened by his premature passing.”
