Danny Barnes bonus CD cuts DMB live songs

The Dave Matthews Band and Danny Barnes bonus CD accompanying Barnes’ new album, Pizza Box, will not include any DMB songs.

Customers who pre-order Pizza Box will receive a free copy of the bonus CD, Catterpult Into Outerspace. When ATO Records announced the pre-order last week, the label said the bonus CD would be made up of songs that DMB and Barnes performed together during DMB’s recent three-night stand at The Gorge Amphitheater in George, Wash.

During those concerts, DMB and Barnes played two songs from Pizza Box, “Road” and “Caveman,” as well as several DMB songs. But now ATO Records says the bonus CD will include only the live versions of “Road” and “Caveman,” along with two Pizza Box B-sides, “Lifeline” and “Neighbor.”

The live versions of DMB songs were a major incentive to pre-order Pizza Box, and this change will undoubtedly hurt sales. ATO Records did not give a reason for the change, but DMB is not an ATO act — even though Dave Matthews founded the label — and the band may not have had permission to play its songs on another label.
