Dave Matthews-Herbie Hancock duet coming

A Dave Matthews and Herbie Hancock duet will be part of Herbie Hancock’s Imagine Project, a new album and documentary by the jazz legend due next year, Billboard reports.

The duet between Dave and Hancock is based on Falling Off the Roof,” a song Dave and Carter Beauford played once at a Dave Matthews Band show in 2007. Hancock told Billboard that Dave plays a Veillette guitar on the song — which Dave also used during that 2007 performance — and the lyrics begin, “Falling off the roof/Looking up at the stars/ Trying to get away from this world.” Those are very similar to the lyrics from 2007: “Falling off the roof/ Trying to get closer to the stars/ And farther from the world.”

But there will be one big difference with the new song. There are plans to translate the lyrics into Balinese or Indonesian, Hancock said. He and Dave recorded the song in one day during DMB’s recent tour stop in San Francisco, and famous jazz musician Marcus Miller played bass.

Herbie Hancock’s Imagine Project will feature all original songs that mix languages and styles from collaborators’ home countries, and special concerts with collaborators are in the works. Other guests on the album will include Anoushka and Ravi Shankar and Jeff Beck.
