Dave Matthews Band names new album
Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King

Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King is the name of the new Dave Matthews Band album.

DMB announced the name of the album tonight. The title is a tribute to late DMB saxophonist LeRoi Moore, whose nickname was "Groogrux," according to AntsMarching.org.

This video, posted by AntsMarching.org earlier this week, shows Boyd Tinsley playing violin in the studio, possibly to the song that inspired the Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King album title:

Dave Matthews posted the following lyrics, which apparently are from this song, on Twitter the other day: "Still here dancing with the Groo Grux King. We'll be drinking big whiskey while we dance and sing. When we get to the end, I'm gonna end."

Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King is due out June 2.

New Dave Matthews Band album delayed to June,
North American summer tour dates announced

Dave Matthews Band has delayed the release of its new album.

The new DMB album was supposed to come out April 14, but the band announced today that it delayed the album's release date to June 2. Dave Matthews said on Twitter today that the album was late, "but not for a lack of effort."

DMB also announced its North American summer tour today, along with early plans for a European tour in late June and early July. The North American tour will begin May 27 in Darien Center, N.Y. and run through Oct. 2 in Tulsa, Okla.

Stops include several cities and town DMB has not visited in a while (if ever), including Montreal, Syracuse and Bethel, N.Y. and Des Moines, Iowa. There are also two venues yet to be announced in San Francisco and Boston -- lending credence to rumors of two Fenway Park concerts.

Opening acts for the summer tour are Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Femi Kuti and the Positive Force, The Hold Steady, Umphrey's McGee, Old Crow Medicine Show, Jason Mraz, Hill Country Revue, Donovan Frankenreiter, Robert Earl Keen, Yonder Mountain String Band, Switchfoot and G. Love and Special Sauce.

DMB will also embark on a spring tour. The band had billed the first show, April 14 at Madison Square Garden, as the album release party, and the first time that fans would hear songs from the new album.

News of the album delay has raised questions about whether or not DMB will play those new songs on the spring tour, but Dave seemed to answer those questions on Twitter today, saying, "we should probably play some new stuff anyway. Don't you think? Practice a little."

Dave Matthews Band summer tour dates due soon

Dave Matthews Band summer tour dates will be out "within a week or so," according to AntsMarching.org.

Some sort of European tour should be part of the announcement, as DMB has already confirmed three overseas tour dates: Hard Rock Calling in London on June 28, Rock Werchter in Belgium on July 2 and Optimus Alive!09 in Lisbon on July 11.

The DMB summer tour dates in the United States could also include a stop at Fenway Park in Boston.

Dave Matthews Band at Fenway Park rumored

Dave Matthews Band played Fenway Park in Boston in 2006 and may be returning in 2009.

The Boston Globe reported today that DMB "is indeed on board to play a couple of shows at the ballpark," although no dates are set. The band played Fenway Park on July 7 and July 8, 2006 and released a recording of the shows as Live Trax Vol. 6.

DMB would become the first band to play Fenway Park in two different years since the stadium began hosting annual summer concerts in 2003. Other headliners have included Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, the Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffett, the Police and Neil Diamond.

LeRoi Moore excluded from Grammy memorial

The Grammys did not honor LeRoi Moore during their tribute to the fallen musicians of the past year. And now the Recording Academy is feeling the backlash.

LeRoi died Aug. 19 from complications of a June ATV accident, and he was one of the more well-known, current musicians to pass away in 2008. But when the Grammys aired a video montage during Sunday night's awards show, the name and face of LeRoi Moore was nowhere to be found.

The oversight -- or downright lack of respect, however you want to look at it -- drew the ire of Dave Matthews Band fans and members alike. Dave Matthews wrote on Twitter, "the Grammies (sic) are not my cup of tea," while Stefan Lessard was much angrier: "It just goes to show how full of shit the Grammys have become."

The Academy has offered this explanation for not honoring LeRoi, according to TMZ.com:

"Nearly 250 members of our music community have passed in the last year, and all of them have been listed in the program book for the 51st Annual GRAMMY Awards, including LeRoi Moore. For the "Encore" segment of our annual GRAMMY Awards telecast, unfortunately we are unable to include all of the talented and wonderful people within the allotted timeframe. The Academy recognizes Moore's contributions to music and music education, and we are deeply saddened by his premature passing."

DMB to play Hard Rock Calling show in London

Dave Matthews Band will play the Hard Rock Calling concert in London on June 28.

DMB isn't headlining the event; the band is supporting Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The concert will take place in Hyde Park.

The makings of a DMB European tour seem to be in the works, as the band is also playing the Optimus Alive!09 festival in Lisbon, Portugal on July 11.

Dave Matthews discusses new song, 'Squirm'

One of the songs Dave Matthews Band is working on during the current studio sessions is apparently called "Squirm."

Dave Matthews posted the following message on Twitter last night:
working on a song called skworm(squirm). I named it before I wrote it and managed to use the word in the song,so I kept the name.
Dave has a tendency to be very irreverent with his Twitter posts, so take that for what it's worth. But it is still the first somewhat-official news about a song that could appear on the new DMB album, which is due April 14.

Dave Matthews Band to play Portugal festival

Dave Matthews Band will headline the Optimus Alive!09 festival in Lisbon, Portugal on July 11.

The show will mark DMB's second concert in Lisbon, following the wildly successful May 25, 2007 show that spawned Live Trax Vol. 10. That show featured an extremely rare double encore, as well as a guest appearance by Tom Morello.

The performance at Optimus Alive!09 raises some questions about the timing of a DMB summer tour in North America. The festival could fall during a break in such a tour, or DMB could be taking part of the summer to tour Europe.
