Dave Matthews Band could play the
Super Bowl XLIV halftime show, if NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's iPod is any indication.
Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com lists DMB as one of 10 acts that the NFL could choose to play next year's Super Bowl halftime show in Miami. He reports that Goodell loaded his iPod with DMB songs before a recent hiking trip to Mt. Rainier -- a good sign, even though Goodell's wife said last year she was skeptical about DMB performing at the game.
An NFL spokesman said league execs want an act that is "exciting, relevant and has broad appeal due to our immense and diverse worldwide audience."
DMB is more relevant now than at any time in the past decade, thanks to its new album,
Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart and spawned the hit single "Funny the Way It Is." The band has been a relative unknown internationally for most of its career but is in the middle of a successful European tour this month.
Other potential Super Bowl XLIV halftime show acts include the Eagles, Bon Jovi and Miami Dolphins business partner Jimmy Buffett, according to Marvez. Previous Super Bowl halftime shows in the Goodell era have featured Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
