Dave Matthews draws more FOX News criticism

Bill O'Reilly isn't the only FOX News commentator criticizing Dave Matthews for his comments about the role of race in criticism of President Barack Obama.

Greg Gutfeld, host of Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld, posted a rant against Dave today.

"You may remember a few years back the tour bus belonging to rabid environmentalist/human kazoo Dave Mathews dumped a pile of human waste through the grates of a Chicago bridge, drenching folks on a boat, as well as polluting the river," Gutfeld writes. "Well, the chirping, goggle-eyed warbler is at it again, this time spewing a load of crap on America in an interview with CNN."

Dave's quote on CNN, which has riled the conservative community, was, "There's a good population of people in this country that are terrified of the president only because he's black, even if they don't say it. And I think a lot of them, behind closed doors, do say it."

Gutfeld calls Dave's quote a "tiresome screed" driven by the guilt celebrities have "about their own cushy existence."

"It's enough to make me boycott Dave Mathews' music," he continues. "Which I admit is pointless, since I never listened his crap to begin with."

On Monday's episode of The O'Reilly Factor, O'Reilly called Dave a "pinhead."

A.J. Hawk loves Dave Matthews

A.J. Hawk, the Green Bay Packers' linebacker and former Ohio State standout, is a huge Dave Matthews fan.

Hawk talked about his Dave Matthews obsession in a profile this week on ESPN.com's local Milwaukee site:
I’m not really into hard-core rock. People always think that when they see me, with the long hair. They think I’m into the crazy, death-metal thing. But I’m not into that at all. I’m a big Dave Matthews fan. He’s all over my iPod. I listen to a lot of Jimmy Buffett, Bob Marley. I’ve been to like 35 Dave Matthews shows. I started going to his concerts when I was in sixth grade. And I’ve been going anytime I can ever since. I met him – without me being a celebrity or anything. Me, my brother and my dad went to a show when I was a freshman in high school in North Carolina, and his bus happened to be parked at our hotel, and I sat out there all day and waited for him to walk out. I got a picture with him and everything. It was cool.

Bill O'Reilly says Dave Matthews is a 'pinhead'

Bill O'Reilly called Dave Matthews a "pinhead" Monday night on The O'Reilly Factor.

O'Reilly, the conservative talk show host, called Dave a "pinhead" in response to Dave's comments in a CNN interview, where he said he thinks some criticism of President Barack Obama is racially motivated.

"On the pinhead front, South African singer Dave Matthews seems to know a lot about America," O'Reilly said before playing a clip from Dave's CNN interview.

It should be no surprise that O'Reilly, with his staunchly conservative views on immigration, identified Dave as South African, even though Dave has spent the vast majority of his life in the United States and is more involved in politics than a lot of native-born Americans.

Dave is not the only Dave Matthews Band member involved in a brewing political feud this week. Stefan Lessard called John Edwards a "sleaze ball" yesterday in light of the news that Edwards promised his mistress he'd marry her after his cancer-stricken wife died, and DMB would perform at the wedding.

Stefan Lessard calls John Edwards a 'sleaze ball'

Stefan Lessard has stepped up his criticism of John Edwards, calling the former senator and Democratic vice presidential nominee a "sleaze ball."

The New York Times reported this weekend that Edwards promised his mistress, Rielle Hunter, that he would marry her and Dave Matthews Band would perform at the wedding. Stefan initially responded yesterday, saying DMB doesn't play at weddings and calling Edwards' promise "ridiculous and wrong."

Today he posted this clarification on Twitter: "Maybe I was too hasty, we don't play weddings for sleaze balls."

DMB doesn't play weddings, Stefan Lessard says

John Edwards' Dave Matthews Band wedding promise to his former mistress, Rielle Hunter, has drawn a response from Stefan Lessard.

"We don't play weddings. Period," Stefan wrote last night on Twitter. He added that Edwards' promise was "ridiculous and wrong."

Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and Democratic nominee for vice president, told Hunter he would marry her after his cancer-stricken wife died, and DMB would perform at the wedding.

DMB may not do weddings, as Stefan wrote, but Dave Matthews has. In 2004, part of his Dave Matthews and Friends band performed at RealNetworks CEO Rob Glaser's wedding in Seattle, featuring a guest appearance by Eddie Vedder.

Dave Matthews: Obama criticism racially motivated

Dave Matthews talks politics in a new CNN interview, agreeing with former President Jimmy Carter that some heated criticism of President Barack Obama is racially motivated.

"There's a good population of people in this country that are terrified of the president only because he's black, even if they don't say it," Dave says. "And I think a lot of them, behind closed doors, do say it. Maybe I'm paranoid about it, but I don't think someone who disagreed as strongly as they do with Obama -- if it was Clinton -- would have stood up and screamed at him during his speech."

Dave also talks about the media, his charity work, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, moving to Outer Mongolia and milking a yak. (It's a Dave interview. What else would you expect?) Check out video of the interview:

John Edwards' Dave Matthews Band wedding

John Edwards told his mistress that Dave Matthews Band would play at their wedding after his cancer-stricken wife died, according to The New York Times.

The Dave Matthews Band wedding promise is part of a much larger story about a federal investigation into Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter and his possibly upcoming admission that he fathered her 19-month-old daughter.

The Times cites an Edwards aide's book proposal that says Edwards, the former North Carolina senator and Democratic nominee for vice president, promised Hunter he would marry her in a New York rooftop ceremony featuring a DMB performance. (Edwards' wife Elizabeth Edwards has breast cancer.)

Edwards apparently thought he could pull some strings with DMB because Boyd Tinsley was a major supporter of his, donated money to his campaigns and played at fundraiser concerts. Hunter also used Boyd's song "True Reflections" in four videos she produced for Edwards' failed 2008 presidential campaign.

Danny Barnes bonus CD cuts DMB live songs

The Dave Matthews Band and Danny Barnes bonus CD accompanying Barnes' new album, Pizza Box, will not include any DMB songs.

Customers who pre-order Pizza Box will receive a free copy of the bonus CD, Catterpult Into Outerspace. When ATO Records announced the pre-order last week, the label said the bonus CD would be made up of songs that DMB and Barnes performed together during DMB's recent three-night stand at The Gorge Amphitheater in George, Wash.

During those concerts, DMB and Barnes played two songs from Pizza Box, "Road" and "Caveman," as well as several DMB songs. But now ATO Records says the bonus CD will include only the live versions of "Road" and "Caveman," along with two Pizza Box B-sides, "Lifeline" and "Neighbor."

The live versions of DMB songs were a major incentive to pre-order Pizza Box, and this change will undoubtedly hurt sales. ATO Records did not give a reason for the change, but DMB is not an ATO act -- even though Dave Matthews founded the label -- and the band may not have had permission to play its songs on another label.

Dave Matthews-Herbie Hancock duet coming

A Dave Matthews and Herbie Hancock duet will be part of Herbie Hancock's Imagine Project, a new album and documentary by the jazz legend due next year, Billboard reports.

The duet between Dave and Hancock is based on "Falling Off the Roof," a song Dave and Carter Beauford played once at a Dave Matthews Band show in 2007. Hancock told Billboard that Dave plays a Veillette guitar on the song -- which Dave also used during that 2007 performance -- and the lyrics begin, "Falling off the roof/Looking up at the stars/ Trying to get away from this world." Those are very similar to the lyrics from 2007: "Falling off the roof/ Trying to get closer to the stars/ And farther from the world."

But there will be one big difference with the new song. There are plans to translate the lyrics into Balinese or Indonesian, Hancock said. He and Dave recorded the song in one day during DMB's recent tour stop in San Francisco, and famous jazz musician Marcus Miller played bass.

Herbie Hancock's Imagine Project will feature all original songs that mix languages and styles from collaborators' home countries, and special concerts with collaborators are in the works. Other guests on the album will include Anoushka and Ravi Shankar and Jeff Beck.

Dave Matthews Band-Danny Barnes live CD due

A Dave Matthews Band and Danny Barnes live album will come free with pre-ordered copies of Barnes' new studio album, Pizza Box.

Barnes, a banjo player, performed during DMB's recent three-night stand at The Gorge. Songs from those concerts will make up the live album. The track listing is not yet available, but over the three shows, DMB and Barnes played "Caveman" and "Road," two Barnes songs, along with DMB's "The Dreaming Tree," "Spaceman," "Corn Bread," "Bartender," "Alligator Pie," "Raven" and "Recently."

Pizza Box also features guest appearances by Dave Matthews, who drew the cover art, and Rashawn Ross. Longtime DMB collaborator John Alagia produced the album, which was recorded at DMB's Haunted Hollow studio in Charlottesville, Va. and will be available Oct. 20.

Black-Eyed Peas crashed DMB performance

The Dave Matthews Band and Black-Eyed Peas collaboration at the Outside Lands Festival was not planned. In fact, DMB didn't even invite the Black-Eyed Peas on stage, Dave Matthews says in the Los Angeles Times.

The collaboration came during DMB's performance of "Jimi Thing," when Fergie and apl.de.ap, who had been watching the set at the side of the stage, came on stage. Fergie sang a line from Sublime's "Santeria," and then apl.de.ap rapped and had a pretty funny dance-off with Dave.

But Dave didn't seem to mind that the Black-Eyed Peas crashed the performance.

"I guess some bands might be, like, 'Who do you think you are?'" he told the Times. "But what moved them to come on stage was joy, and they were just carried away. That's kind of what our music is."

LeRoi Moore Fund, Web site launched

The new LeRoi Moore Fund will offer scholarships and support charities in honor of the late Dave Matthews Band saxophonist.

The LeRoi Moore Fund, established by his trust, will grant scholarships to three institutions: North Carolina Central University, where his parents studied business and education; Albemarle High School, which LeRoi attended; and the University of Virginia School of Nursing. (UVA Medical Center initially treated LeRoi after the June 2008 ATV accident that ultimately claimed his life.)

In addition, the LeRoi Moore Fund will support Toys for Tots, Habitat for Humanity, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The fund is part of a new LeRoi Moore Web site DMB has set up to honor one of its founding members.

Dave Matthews, Rob Cavallo Q&A scheduled

Dave Matthews and Rob Cavallo will speak at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles on Sept. 15.

Cavallo, who produced Dave Matthews Band's new album, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, and Dave will talk about their collaboration and answer questions submitted from Warehouse members. The audience will be limited to 200 people, and tickets for A Conversation with Dave Matthews and Rob Cavallo are available through the Warehouse for $75.

DMB's Bama Works Foundation will match the proceeds from the event, and all the money will benefit the Grammy Museum and the Grammy Foundation.

This event seems to smooth over the tension that existed between DMB and the Grammys after the Grammys' televised ceremony in February did not include LeRoi Moore in its memorial of deceased musicians. At the time, Dave said the Grammys weren't his "cup of tea," and Stefan Lessard said the Grammys were "full of shit."
