DMB 2009 Summer Tour Awards: Best Guest

We've already announced our readers' choice for Best Cover Song. Now it's time to give out our Dave Matthews Band 2009 Summer Tour Award for Best Guest.

The nominees for Best Guest in our DMB 2009 Summer Tour Awards are Gregg Allman, Danny Barnes, Willie Nelson, Robert Randolph and Nestor Torres. And the winner is ...

Robert Randolph

Randolph played pedal steel guitar with DMB on nine songs during the 2009 summer tour. Highlights included his surprise appearance in the encore at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, where he joined DMB on the cover songs "All Along the Watchtower" and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)," and his improv jams on the covers "Cissy Strut" and "I Got a Woman/Gold Digger."

There are no honorable mentions in this category, because Randolph so dominated the voting among our readers.

Bud Light Port Paradise cruise diary: Day 3

The Bud Light Port Paradise cruise featuring Dave Matthews Band took place this weekend. DMB fan Jake Huff was aboard Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas and filed nightly updates for us:

It was much easier to get off the boats on Sunday. We were anchored about a mile offshore and had to get on smaller boats to go ashore. We got on boat No. 2 and were on the island by 10 a.m. Once there we walked around the entire island just trying to get away from the craziness for awhile. And it worked! We met a couple from Denver on our walk and saw some beautiful scenery and sea life.

The concert was originally moved from 2:30 p.m. to 2 and then moved again to 1. We headed over to the stage at about 12:15 and were able to weave our way to about five-deep, dead center. We then saw some of the other New Jersey winners and Rob Messina, the lead singer of a New Jersey Dave Matthews Band cover band, right in front of Rashawn Ross and Jeff Coffin, so we moved over by them.

The band came out EXACTLY at 1 p.m. on the dot. And the crowd was fired up. It didn't take long for the girls on shoulders to become topless, and Dave Matthews remarked that it was a "very handsome crowd. "

It was a Boyd Tinsley-heavy show, with his new solo in "Funny the Way It Is," "Tripping Billies" and "Everyday." Because of the sweat from the heat, he actually lost his sunglasses a few times.

This was the first show that I've seen where Tim Reynolds really just stayed in the background. Except for "So Damn Lucky," I don't recall any long solos from him.

Jeff and Rashawn were amazing on "Jimi Thing" as they always are. I got a few great shots of Jeff playing 2 saxes at one time. The "Sexy M.F." outro was more fitting surrounded by bikini-clad women. :)

I'm sure some of you have seen the setlist, and to be honest, seeing them on a beach in the middle of the ocean, I didn't mind "Satellite" or even "Stay" to end the main set.

After the show, I stayed where I was to try to get a drumstick, which never happened. My girlfriend left right away, jumped in the ocean, walked back up as the band was heading to their boat and held Dave's hand as he walked back to the boat. She said thanks and asked how he was; all he could muster was, "I'm tired. I'm so very tired. " She shook hands with all of them except Carter Beauford as they left. Carter was still throwing sticks.

After the chaos subsided a bit we went back in the water for an hour and headed back to our boat at about ... I don't even know. We got on the first boat back to the ship that we were waiting for. It was about a 20-minute wait. I heard later that some people had to wait over an hour and a half to get on the shuttle back to their boats. There were more boats going to the Monarch of the Seas than the Majesty, because they had a much farther way to go to get back up to Port Canaveral, Fla.

That evening we had dinner in the buffet as soon as we got back on the boat with a cool kid from Suffolk University in Boston. Very nice kid, even got some studying done on the boat. Good luck on that exam on Wednesday, man!

After dinner we headed up to the top deck to watch the sunset, and it was amazing. Words will not do it justice, but I will have pics. Suffice it to say that when the final sliver of sun disappeared, there was a round of applause from all those watching. I am getting chills just remembering it.

After a short nap we headed to the back of the boat where Rob Messina was playing an impromptu acoustic set -- a very chill, relaxing evening with some new good friends. It was a wonderful way to wind down after a chaotic couple of days.

It was very hard to stay in contact with anyone on the boat and especially those on the other boat, so I do completely and sincerely apologize to those who I missed. Andy: I did run around looking for a White Sox hat, and I couldn't find you. Laurens (both), Jeff and Amber and the rest from the Monarch: My apologies for hitting Senor Frog's late. I had a beautiful brunette engulf my soul for the day, and time stood still as it has with her many times over the last four and a half years.

I was surprised that the crowd was as cool as it was. After seeing the parties on the pool deck the first two nights, I was very afraid that there would be a negative vibe from what I could only describe as a crowd that didn't look like your typical DMB crowd. I also think that the Warehousers and Ants that were fortunate enough to make the trip created such a vibe that it spread to those around us.

There were die-hard fans, casual fans and some who had never heard them before, but in the end we were all friends and we all enjoyed our day together. All, that is, except the guy in front of us throwing beer all over everyone. No one was his friend.

Thank you, Royal Caribbean for your hospitality and service, although spotty at times. You worked to make everything right when it wasn't, and that goes a long way.

Thank you, DMB. Killer show. Thanks for the enthusiasm and passion. And hey Fonz, can I have my suntan lotion back? I was the one that threw it on stage when Dave said he was getting sunburned.

Thank you, Rob Messina for a great night of music after the show. Even though we bullshitted more than you played, it was a nice night spent in great company. We can't wait to see you play again.

Thank you, Bud Light for the opportunity to take a much-needed mini-vacation and for all the hard work your people poured into this event.

And finally, thank you, Colin for asking me to do this. I am sorry that I failed you on the daily updates that I promised, but there was never a spare moment for me to sit in a computer lounge with all we had going on. I hope this recap will give you at least some of what you were expecting or hoping for from me.

I'm on the plane about to land in Newark, and taking two hours to think over the trip has given me smiles and goosebumps and chills and even maybe choked me up a little. It was a weekend I will never forget.

Thank you, Jake!

Bud Light Port Paradise cruise diary: Day 2

The Bud Light Port Paradise cruise featuring Dave Matthews Band took place this weekend. DMB fan Jake Huff was aboard Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas and filed nightly updates for us:

Saturday morning was an early start due to the "motion of the ocean," literally. My girlfriend woke up at 6:30, feelin' it. My remedy ... MIMOSAS for breakfast and a dip in the pool. It did the trick!

Breakfast was good but wasn't worth the wait in the main dining room, when the food in the buffet was just as good and the service wasn't slow.

We docked in Nassau about 10:30 that morning, and the wait to get off the boat was terrible. We didn't book any excursions; rather we just walked over to the Hilton, went through the lobby to the beach and jumped on one of their boats to go snorkeling. It was great! We took a 20-minute boat ride out to a private island and went along the reefs. I've done it several times, and this was by far the best.

On the way in, Basil, our guide, recommended a local restaurant about a 20-minute walk away from the ship, and we ate conch salad and snapper and lobster and drank Kalik beer with a bunch of locals. It was a tremendous day.

Unfortunately the day got away from us, and by the time we got back to Senor Frog's, there was no on left from the Warehouse gathering.

Getting back on the boat was another disaster. The lines were long (there were five cruise ships in port that day), the building they herded us through was hotter than you could ever imagine, and to top it all off, two guys came pushing through the crowd holding a girl over their heads as she proceeded to get rid of her lunch and breakfast from the previous two weeks.

Once back on the boat, we went up to the pool deck for the captain's cocktail party, where they were serving free rum punch. This was a nice change from the constant barrage of beer that had been thrown at us to that point.

We had dinner that evening with a Warehouser, Mike, and his brother Erick. Great guys! The salmon at dinner was wonderful; the service was terrible. They never brought our drink orders until we asked for the third time, and our water was never refilled, but the food and the company was awesome. That evening from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. was once again free Bud Light and Bud Light Lime time!

Saturday night we docked in CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island. There was a decent fireworks show for us at 11 p.m., and we went to bed shortly after that knowing that Sunday was going to be a BIG DAY!

Bud Light Port Paradise cruise diary: Day 1

The Bud Light Port Paradise cruise featuring Dave Matthews Band took place this weekend. DMB fan Jake Huff was aboard Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas and filed nightly updates for us:

Wow, what a whirlwind!!

After departing from Port Miami, Sprint service was nonexistent, and my daily updates sank to the bottom of the Caribbean Sea.

Friday we boarded the boat and were handed our choice of Bud Light or Bud Light Lime. We threw our bags in our rooms and headed instantly for the pool deck, where buckets of six were $13! WOOT! Can't beat that. They had a DJ on the pool deck at all the peak times, and it did start out ugly.

5 to 7 p.m. Friday was our free beer time, and they had plenty of stations to accommodate the already-drunken masses. Several Bud Light Limes later I was probably the happiest drunk on the boat :)

Dinner Friday evening was spent in the company of three other couples who had never seen DMB before. The steak was tremendous.

The costume party was Friday evening, and the imaginations on the boat were great! The group winners were a bunch of guys dressed as Teletubbies. The solo male winner category was a tie between a guy dressed as a soldier from 300 with an outfit made entirely of Bud Light boxes and cans and a guy dressed as Megatron with all Bud Light stuff. The female winner was a barely naked girl, and I wasn't sure what she was, but she was hot as hell! Other costumes that warrant mention were the Muscle and Fitness magazine cover and Bert and Ernie.

We headed to bed about 1 a.m. after things on the pool deck were shut down and they moved the party indoors.

Bud Light Port Paradise cruise: Pre-sail update

The Bud Light Port Paradise cruise with Dave Matthews Band sets sail tomorrow.

DMB fan Jake Huff will be on one of the two Bud Light Port Paradise cruise ships for the weekend getaway to the Bahamas, where the band will play a Sunday afternoon concert on the private island of Cococay. Jake has graciously agreed to file daily updates about the cruise for us, and here's what he had to say in his pre-cruise update:

There is a Warehouse gathering at Senor Frogs in Nassau for everyone from both ships to get together before the concert. Also, each ship’s Warehousers are getting together before the costume party tomorrow night for a few drinks and to be able to head to the party together. The transfer shuttles are alledgedly going to have free Bud Light for all passengers. This is gonna get ugly in a hurry.

We'll have more updates on the Bud Light Port Paradise cruise with Dave Matthews Band throughout the weekend.

DMB 2009 Summer Tour Awards: Best Cover Song

We'll be giving out our Dave Matthews Band 2009 Summer Tour Awards over the next week. Fans voted for winners in five categories -- Best Cover Song, Best Guest, Best Song, Best Concert and Band MVP -- on our Facebook page.

Today we announce the winner of Best Cover Song. The nominees were "All Along the Watchtower" by Bob Dylan, "Burning Down the House" by Talking Heads, "The Maker" by Daniel Lanois, "Rye Whiskey" by Tex Ritter and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" by Sly and the Family Stone. And the winner is ...

"All Along the Watchtower"

DMB's unique spin on "Watchtower" has always made the song a fan favorite. But this year the song benefited from the return of the "Stairway to Heaven" jam, with Tim Reynolds playing Jimmy Page's guitar solo and the horn section tackling the vocal melody. Dave Matthews even sang part of "Stairway" during some versions, and Stefan Lessard often interpolated the song during his bass intros to "Watchtower."

Honorable mentions go to "The Maker" and "Burning Down the House."

'You and Me' music video director discusses shoot

The "You and Me" music video director, Michael Baldwin, discusses the video shoot in a brief interview on Promo News.

Baldwin says it took a whole day just to choose who would appear in the "You and Me" music video, because so many Dave Matthews Band fans responded to the casting calls. (The video, if you haven't seen it yet, features everyday people playing the song alongside the DMB members in a large, empty room.)

"Everyone had spent a few days learning their parts of the song and when they first played along, it was brilliant," Baldwin says in the interview. "They were louder than the playback.”

"You and Me" was the first U.S.-commissioned video for Baldwin, who is British and has previously directed videos for Natalie Imbruglia and Travis.

Rob Cavallo signs with Warner Music Group

Rob Cavallo is Warner Music Group's new chief creative officer, Variety reports.

Cavallo produced Dave Matthews Band's Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King and has also worked with Green Day and My Chemical Romance, among others. Back in August, Dave Matthews told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he wanted Cavallo to produce DMB's next album as well.

"I have no desire to make a record with anyone else right now," Dave said at the time.

Cavallo's signing with Warner Music Group may throw a wrench into those plans, because DMB is signed to RCA Records -- although, as Variety points out, Warner Music Group did release Big Whiskey internationally.

UPDATE (2:43 p.m.): Scratch that last part. A Los Angeles Times report says, "
Cavallo will also be able to work on outside projects with other artists and labels."

Are Dave and Tim ticket prices too high?

Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds tickets will cost $84 (plus fees) for each of their three Las Vegas concerts in December.

We asked fans on our Facebook page if $84 is too much money for Dave and Tim tickets, and here's what some of them had to say:
  • "It's more than this summer's DMB - With only two on the stage, and a smaller crew - A lot smaller production costs... Then I think it's a bit too much for tickets." -- Allan P.
  • "no way.... Dave and Tim is worth any price.." -- Jeff H.
  • "I would still pay it, but it is a bit high. 3 nights worth of tickets is just as much, if not more than what people are paying for flights and accommodations." -- Kim B.
  • "It seems pretty high, compared to other DMB and Dave shows I have seen, but it's in Vegas - everything is more expensive there!" -- Christine C.
  • "yes it's too much and saying that has nothing to do how good of a dmb fan you are. it's 2 weeks before christmas and i have much better things to spend my hard earned money on." -- Kelly P.
