Dave Matthews said in a recent interview with the German site Musicheadquarter that the band and its management have been talking about putting out an album of DMB rare songs.
"There are conversations about that," Dave said. "In fact we’ve been talking about that very recently. ... My manager just sent me a long list of about 40 songs that we have, that we’ve never recorded. He said that I should just think about it. ... I don’t say 'never,' but I tend to look forward rather than behind."
Musicheadquarter specifically asked Dave about the songs "Get in Line," "#40" and "Deed is Done."
"Those are three songs I have a soft spot for," Dave said.
"Get in Line" is a song DMB played regularly in the fall of 1994 and soundchecked once in 1999. Although the band played it during the studio sessions for Crash, Before These Crowded Streets and the Lillywhite Sessions, it never made an album.
DMB also played "Deed Is Done" during the Crash sessions, and Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds played the song several times from 1996 through 1999. "#40" debuted in 1995 and has been a rare treat at concerts since then, and DMB tried the song out during the Before These Crowded Streets sessions as well.
Dave also had this to say about "Machead," the Dave Matthews Band rare song that only a handful of people have ever heard: "It definitely did not evolve into 'Bartender.' ... I sort of remember how it went. It was really pretty."
Other prominent songs that could appear on a Dave Matthews Band rare songs collection include "Build You a House," "Kill the King," "The Idea of You," "Break Free," "Can't Stop," "Crazy Easy," "Good Good Time," "Loving Wings," "Shotgun," "Sister," "Sugar Will" and "Spotlight."
In the interview, Dave also talks about LeRoi Moore, playing in Europe, his acting career, his ATO Records label and the chances of DMB playing "JTR" in concert this year.
