Dave Matthews Band will release “Mercy,” the first single off its upcoming album, on July 16.

Radio industry site first reported the new DMB single release, which producer Steve Lillywhite confirmed early this morning on Twitter. In response to a question from the DMB fan video editor extraordinaire known as Chester Copperpot, Lillywhite said: “it was a toss up between Mercy and _______ for 1st DMB single and Mercy just won it !”

Cali from Mix 104.1 in Boston said today that Stefan Lessard thought “Belly Belly” was the other song under consideration to be the lead single.

Dave Matthews performed “Mercy” live for the first time on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in April, and DMB has played the song 19 times so far on its summer tour. The three other songs from the new DMB album that the band has played on tour are “Sweet,” “Gaucho” and “If Only.”

Lillywhite and others had originally said that none of these four songs would be the new DMB single, but that obviously changed with today’s news. The album is due in September; expect more details to start coming out around the time of the new DMB single’s release.
